Understanding the Needs of the Patient

How does being sick, or worse yet, dying affect patients in the hospital?

Try putting yourself in their shoes. Indeed you may have already experienced a hospital stay yourself or have been called in for support.

When a patient and family first hear their diagnosis or prognosis, they rarely “hear” all of what has been said. A follow-up discussion should take place with their doctor or attending nurse to answer questions, to clear up any misunderstanding or misconstruing of information and assist with clarification. A well-trained and informed pastor in attendance can help minimize denial and shock.
